Mother Nature issues an Executive Stop Work Order

Well... everyone needs a litte rest between planting and weeding. After an unbelievable volume of water has fallen: 90 mm in 5 days. Let's take Wednesday off to let the ground harden a little. We'll get back out there Saturday unless the forecast comes true... Thanks to Jim for the pictures and Dyle for the precipitation data.

Total Germination

Imag0599

So, even though the nuckleheads didn't win the cup, there is some positive news tonight... Things are looking great... in fact, things are tasting great. Garlic Scapes / Spinach / Baby Greens. To the 5 of 55 people that made it out tonight, nice weeding. We'll forgive the rest of you for being Canadian:)

It's good to get the weeds under control this early... and to the mysterious weeders that made their way through the onions and leeks over the past few days, impressive. My money is on Roman but Vicki Could be a likely candidate as well... show yourselves.

A question came up in the meeting with the Dean of Agriculture a few weeks back. He wanted our input on ways that the Faculty could contribute more directly to the success and functioning of our group.

  • What are your ideas?
  • How can the Faculty be more involved with us?
  • What type of programming could they help us with?

City of Edmonton Urban Agriculture Survey

Images_1

Hi folks,

The City of Edmonton is looking for input from stakeholders regarding the formation of an urban agriculture policy (thanks to the Community Garden Network and Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton for passing this along).

If you are interested, it takes about two minutes to complete.

Chain Gang (Potatolandia)

Well... that's it. Everything in. A great push on a chilly day by 16 volunteers on Saturday and that concludes our major planting efforts for the year.

I want to give special mention to Kyle (One Arm) who seeded spuds and raked with only one operational arm all morning. That is the type of blood, sweat and tears that grows a good potato.

This has been our most ambitious planting to date, and I want to reiterate how impressed I have been with the skill and effort we have been putting in. We planted around 1000 potato plants in the ground in 24 100 foot rows. By acreage over time we planted a little more than half an acre in 2 hours... The settlers would be proud if not a little jealous... and I'm not just saying that because of the tractors and rototillers we had at our disposal! (Thank you ALES)

We'll change gears here in the next few days from implementation to maintenance... From labour to weeding harvesting.

See you out there...
